How my business came about: Twenty year ago I wanted contribute to the family income and work doing something I enjoy. I majored in Art in College and did Art show’s and exhibited my paintings. This was cost prohibited I did not want to burden the family budget with the cost of shows and art supplies. My Husband was a High School Math teacher with a modest income. I had to come up with another Idea for making extra income.
I am a knitter and was taught to knit at the early age of four. I decided that custom knitting along with a Yarn Shop should be what I should do as business. This was still an art and I would be surrounded by lots of color like in my vibrant colored oil painting.
I started out doing hand knitted custom sweater for customers also machine knitted custom designed Woobee blankets. The Woobee Blankets I would create any drawing the customer request which was scanned and down loaded into a computer on a knitting machine. I also had classes for people who wanted to learn to knit.
Doing the Knitting and giving lessons made it possible for my Yarn Shop to grow. Another yarn shop open in town which slow my business down due to my shop was in the country. This created a new challenge for me. I needed to come up with a new way to find customer’s for my business. I decided to try the internet which at that time it was still using the HTML language for creating webpage’s and finding a server to sponsor my site.
The internet now, is very user friendly, not like when I first start back in the 90’s. Now I have server that supply the pages, security, and shopping carts. I still do all the photography, description, processing of orders, shipping and visiting with customer. This part of my business I still enjoy.
The name of my shop came from word in an old movie from the 80’s. This word was on all my custom designed knitted Woobee Blanket’s and this was a perfect name for my business. The word “Woobee” is security.
20 years later and still enjoying my Internet Yarn Business plus the customer and vendors I do business with. My Husband is now semi-retired and is a Math Instructor at the community College and I am a Grandmother of 10 Grandchildren range from one year to age nineteen. I also have been a caregiver for my mother who moved in with us over 10 year ago. I still enjoy knitting, drawing, painting and photography. Happy Knitting, Judith Schreckengost – Owner of the Woobee Knitshop.
